My October DIY Mission: The Ultimate Halloween Costume
This October, I set two big goals. One, tackle the monthly steps challenge (more on how that went later), and two, design a Halloween costume that would turn heads, win contests, and be practical enough to wear again and again. And guess what? I totally did! I wore it for multiple events, from Witch’s Night in Kimmswick to a 9 Mile Garden costume bash, and even snagged a win at a costume contest.
From Cruise Inspiration to DIY Reality
The inspiration for my costume came in a pretty unexpected way—a cruise I took back in March. I met these amazing performers decked out in vivid costumes, and I knew right then that I wanted something equally dramatic and unique for Halloween. I wanted it to be “tribal-inspired” with a DIY twist, budget-friendly but impactful. Enter: an old comforter. Yes, you heard that right! My costume transformed from a cozy blanket to a costume masterpiece—complete with lights, layers, a handmade hat, and intricate details.
The Highs, the Lows, and the “What Was I Thinking?!” Moments
Creating this costume wasn’t without its struggles. For one, I don’t know how to sew. Armed with a sewing machine and a whole lot of guesswork, I jumped in, cutting, layering, and (sometimes) fixing things on the fly. From experimenting with pleats to battling a DIY belt that refused to stay on, it was a creative adventure like no other.
Some of My Costume Highlights:
Belt Loops Galore: My customized belt with sturdy loops gave me options to hang all my fun accessories, like poy balls that light up!
The Skirt: I wanted a half-circle skirt that could spin with flair and still be durable. It turned out fabulous—but wow, was it heavy!
Lighting It Up: Since many Halloween events are at night, I wanted to literally shine. I ran cords to hide lights within the fabric, and voilà, instant spotlight!
Last-Minute Hat Hack: When a friend insisted I needed a headpiece, I jumped into a mini DIY marathon and made my own hat. It may have been an impulsive decision, but I loved the result (and, hey, it didn’t fall apart… too badly).
My October Goals Recap: Costume Success, Steps Challenge Fail
For every great costume story, there’s always a little twist, right? My second goal was a steps challenge where I aimed for 370,000 steps. Due to some serious issues with my device, though, that was a no-go. Despite a full-day marathon of three parks, grocery shopping, and poi spinning, I realized it just wasn’t going to happen. Lesson learned: costumes are sometimes easier to conquer than step goals!
What’s Next?
After pouring so much creativity into this costume, I’m already itching to start my next project. So tell me—what do you want to see next? Leave your ideas in the comments, because who knows? I might just take one of them on for a brand-new adventure!
